In his professional career, Henrik is the only goaltender in NHL history to record 11 30-win seasons in his first 12 seasons. He is also the record holder for the most wins by a European-born goaltender in the NHL (405).

Brief biography

Lundqvist was born on March 2, 1982 in Are in the Swedish city of Jämtland (a region known for alpine skiing) in the family of Peter Lundqvist and Eva Johansson.

He is one of three children of his parents. He has a twin brother, Joel, who is also a professional hockey player, and an older sister, Gabriella, who plays tennis.

Herink and his twin brother Joel were introduced to kindergarten teachers who converted the kindergarten sandbox into an outdoor skating rink where the twins frequently skated.

Joel and Henrik’s love and interest in hockey grew when their father, Peter, who worked for a company that sponsored Västra Frölunda HC, took them to Scandinavium, Gothenburg, to watch the team play.

The twin recalled how competitive they were growing up, both in sports and school work. Henrik Lundqvist and his twin brother started playing organized hockey in 1991 as members of Järpens IF. During one of their practices, their coach asked if anyone would like to be a goalie, Joel grabbed and lifted Henrik’s arm.

The family had to move to Båstad, a province in southern Sweden, in 1993 to support their older sister’s tennis career. There the twins joined a Swedish professional hockey club, Rögle BK, and were both selected for Scania’s regional team in 1995. During the 1997–98 season, Frölunda’s junior team coach and Under-16 coach spotted Henrik and his brother while they were playing in the 1998 Scandinavium Cup in Gothenburg. He spoke to their father about the team’s interest in his boys. This is how the two boys started their careers in professional hockey.

Henrik currently plays for the New York Rangers as a goaltender in the National Hockey League (NHL), his twin brother, Joel, still plays for Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He is also the captain of the team.

Career

After starting his professional career successfully with Florunda, Henrik signed with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2005. The Swedish star is skilled, popular and loved by all his teammates and fans. He has several nicknames such as –  Hank ”, “The King of New York”, “King Henrik”.

He made his NHL debut on October 8th , 2005. He very quickly began to show what he was made of and soon went on to 30 wins to break the New York Rangers franchise record, along with a new goaltender .

Henrik Lundqvist has emerged as one of the NHL’s finest and best goaltenders with six consecutive winning seasons over more than 30 early career years, an NHL record. In October 2011, he entered his seventh season as the Rangers starting goaltender.

His stay with the rangers continued to be full of cheers. In 2013, he signed a $59.5 million contract extension with the Rangers, averaging $8.5 million, making him the highest-paid goaltender in the NHL.

In 2014, Lundqvist recorded his 302nd win to become the winningest goalkeeper in Rangers history, overtaking Mike Richter. A week later, he recorded his 50th regular season shutout to become the Rangers point guard, surpassing Hall of Fame goaltender Eddie Giacomin.

Henrik Lundqvist is not only known for always staying in the mouth of the goal on the ice, he has a very strong outgoing life off the ice. He is the co-owner of a restaurant, Tiny’s, located in the TriBeCa neighborhood of New York.

His gorgeous and charming looks also landed him on People magazine’s annual “100 Most Beautiful People” list in 2006 and was also named “Sexiest Man on Ice” in 2009 by Page Six magazine.

He also had a heart for the people. In May 2018, just days after one of the Rangers supporters, 11-year-old O’Callaghan Brendan, was seriously injured in a school bus crash in New Jersey that claimed the lives of two others. Henrik and his teammates get the youngster and his family with an NHL team package. The package included one of Henrik Lundqvist’s hockey sticks, autographed by Henrik himself, and a card expressing their best wishes for him.

Lundqvist is married to his longtime girlfriend Therese Anderson. The couple collided in 1998 while Lundqvist was playing hockey for Frolunda, they attended school for 12 years before taking it to the next level when they got engaged in 2010 and then in August 2011.

They are the proud parents of two daughters – Charlise and Juli. They welcomed their first daughter, Charlise Lundqvist on July 10, 2012, and their second daughter, Juli, on March 20, 2015.

Henrik and Thérèse founded the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation in 2014, a non-profit organization that deals with the health and education of children and families.
