If you’re trying to avoid gluten, pasta can be one of the most frustrating foods to buy, as wheat-based brands greatly outnumber your gluten free alternatives. But gnocchi, those wonderful little Italian dumplings, tend to be more gluten-friendly than their skinny pasta brethren, using alternative ingredients like potato, chickpea, or cauliflower, and a range of different packaging from frozen, to refrigerated to shelf-stable boxes. 

But with more options comes more confusion, so we took it on ourselves to sample a range of gluten free gnocchi brands, ranking them on taste, texture, and (perhaps most importantly) convenience. So, here are our picks for the best gluten free gnocchi you’ll find in your local stores.

Best Gnocchi with Sauce

If you’re feeling lazy, this frozen gnocchi is probably the closest you can get to “instant.” You just throw everything from the bag into a skillet with three teaspoons of water, simmer it all for six to seven minutes, and you’ve got a tasty, saucy gnocchi, ready to plate. The pesto sauce is one of the best parts of this meal, with a strong, savory flavor mixed with frozen tomato pieces that give it a rich texture that you don’t get from a jar. And the cauliflower gnocchi holds up well for being frozen, giving you plenty of bite and not devolving into mush like some other frozen pastas we could (but won’t) mention.

Best Boxed Gnocchi

If you need a gnocchi you can keep on a shelf and forget about for a while, Delallo’s offers this shelf-stable gluten free gnocchi that lets you just boil them for a few minutes and toss them on the plate. Most Filling Gnocchi

This refrigerated gluten free potato gnocchi might not last as long as the frozen or shelf-stable kind, but it definitely delivers a hearty potato taste, possibly because it’s 75 percent potato purée. (But I’m no scientist.) I can say that all that potato gives it a great homemade taste, a light, fluffy bite and a filling sensation as those carbs fill up every inch of your stomach.

Best Refrigerated Gnocchi

Of all the gluten free gnocchi I tried for this list, this refrigerated gluten free potato gnocchi had the shortest ingredients list with just “rehydrated potatoes, canola oil and salt.” But those three ingredients create a simple, tasty GF gnocchi with a great, doughy feel and a rich, homemade taste. (That’s assuming “homemade” doesn’t mean made in “my home,” where the kitchen is just a pile of Del Taco bags and empty sriracha bottles.)

When they say “restaurant quality, ” they’re not kidding. This was my favorite gluten free gnocchi of all the dumplings I sampled. Now, part of that might come from the cooking instructions, which ask you to pan sear the gnocchi after boiling it. But either way, it’s hard to beat this frozen potato-based gnocchi, which even boasts a slightly nutty flavor, presumably from the almond flour that makes it gluten free.
